2017 – This may not look that great or special, but at the time this work was a personal breakthrough. A kind of “I can do it” moment which was reflected in the Art Diary at the time.

If you hadn’t driven a car for the best part of 20 years you wouldn’t just jump in and head down the motorway. You would re-familiarise yourself with the controls first; practice reversing; do a hand break start on a hill and then warm yourself up on the back roads before going flat out at 80mph.

Doing this coloured sketch was:

“a statement of the intention to return to the work. I didn’t think I’d get back into the art again as I thought maybe ‘I’m done with that’. It’s hard to re-invent anything.”
