PALM FLOWER

13 x 21 cm

2020 – This palm tree grows in the small courtyard outside our back door. It does not flower every year but when it does, during the Autumn, its beauty is arresting.

It was while I was working on this painting that I woke up one morning and I couldn’t get the colour mixing right. A cognitive part of my brain seemed to go missing. I couldn’t recognise numbers or letters anymore and thought something was out of kilter. It was.

I went to A & E the same day and I’m glad I did. Once admitted, I was confined to a hospital bed, laying horizontal on my back. and had to stay like that for three weeks. The doctors had found a blood clot in the carotid artery in my left neck and during my stay, they performed the operation.

Covid-19 kicked in as I was coming out of hospital and I was able to get back to painting my beloved flowers. People moaned constantly about lock down, whereas just being able to get out of bed and walk around the room felt like an incredible freedom for me.
