ODE TO MURAKAMI
Artists, writers, and musicians invariably inspire one another. This page is about how Killing Commendatore inspired me to paint the portrait of the Man with the White Subaru.
I wrote some words – lyrics if you like – and my friend, Andy set them to music. The result was Suntanned Face. You can listen to the track here:
It is work in progress – a collaborative project between me and An Di Yi – more songs should follow.
Meanwhile, you can listen to An Di Yi on his Spotify page.
SUNTANNED FACE
Painting your portrait, red, green and black
I feel your psyche on the attack
My brush has no control
Your anger is raging in my soul
To catch your likeness
Is no easy task
Painting like Turner tied to the mast
Two distant hands
Steer you inland
Are you death or just a fisherman?
Chorus:
I saw you in Miyagi
That small port of call
In a white Subaru
I saw you in Miyagi
That small port of call
In a white Subaru
Your suntanned face haunts my dreams
The stink of oil and diesel
The smell of rotting cod
Often make me think that there can be no loving God
Deep furrows ploughed upon your brow
Days at sea the here and now
How you must have travelled around
Nuclear reactors shutting you down
Rode out the Fukushima storm
wrapped in a jacket just before dawn
We all saw you on TV
Watch that tanker helplessly
Eyes that burn into your skull
Screeching gulls the keeling frame Tsunami pounds again and again and again and again . . .
