GRAPES

28 x 17 cm

2022 – Some of the vineyards in the local area get abandoned and they are left to grow wild. Usually the grapes get harvested before the end of August, but in mid-September the vines we found were still growing.

I’ve never painted fruit – and have never felt inclined to do so, but these grapes inspired me. I was daunted by the task of capturing the light and succulence of them.

I began by painting everything non-grape, and then began on the grapes themselves. It’s not approaching the still life benchmark for work of this kind, but I was surprised how quickly I could create a reasonably good resemblance even with limited ability and a lack of technique.
